I wanted to email this anecdote (if it's even that) to my first friend, Laura, but then I realized that the only address I have for her is very old and no longer exists. So instead I will share it with the world (or, whatever portion of the world reads this).
I'm wearing a long, simple dress today, and come to think of it there is something very simple and old-fashioned about the cut of it, like it wouldn't be too out of place in an Amish community (a couple weeks ago, incidentatlly, I got on this weird kick where I wanted to be a Mennonite, or at least pretend I was a Mennonite, or at least be a Mennonite-wannabe, but that's beside the point)... anyway this one girl, 4, at breakfast, told me, "It's too COLD for dresses today!" (it soon warmed up, also incidentally), and I said, "This is a warm dress though, it is long and has long sleeves and is made of warm fabric." She decided to accept this, and then added, "Like Laura, Laura always wears dresses." I assumed she was talking about an older friend, like a babysitter or something because she doesn't have an older sister, and I said a noncommitive "Does she?" and she continued, "Yes, on Little House on the Prairie, Laura wears dresses. I like Laura."
Well, THIS got us into a discussion about Little House on the Prairie, which I thought was funny, because here I was talking to a preschooler about her favorite TV show which coincidentally enough had been MY favorite TV show when I was in preschool! And I told her how my best friend had been named Laura, too, so we always pretended we were in Little House on the Prairie (of course SHE was always Laura). (We also used to play Wonder Woman, but I don't think they're showing Wonder Woman repeats on the Hallmark Channel). I just think it's neat, here it is nearly a quarter century later, and it's STILL the favorite TV show of preschool girls. ('course, the story itself is even older and still popular among MANY ages, but somehow the TV show bit struck me as more interesting). I felt a cool connection, and I hadn't even thought of it in so long that that made it even cooler.
It's funny... they weren't around when I was in preschool, but I've noticed Power Rangers has never gone out of style among the preschool set also. I thought when my brother was into it that it was a passing fad society-wise, but it turns out it's more of a passing fad AGE-wise. It's THE number one thing of preschool and kindergarten boys in any year. Whenever I've dealt with preschoolers or kindergarteners over the past ten years, they've always still been into Power Rangers. They just get out of it when they hit, like, first grade. Except my brother, who didn't get out of it until like fourth grade. Or whenever he discovered The Magic Schoolbus.

Date: 2006-05-26 09:02 pm (UTC)From:The Power Rangers are like Menudo. They just keep replacing the people. Or maybe it's more like that ship where all the pieces were replaced, so there's the question as to whether it's the same ship. But anyway, yeah, I didn't think they'd last anywhere near as long as they have. There are lot of children's characters or fads that go in and out style, but the Power Rangers seem to be here to stay.
