Yesterday my kids took a Ducktales DVD out of the library (The Big Library, which I should probably stop calling the Big Library since our new library is going to be plenty big itself. But the library in the next town over, where all the rich people live so it has a much huger budget for materials and services; as opposed to the local library where I work, but I am not allowed to haphazardly buy large truckloads of all the great materials out there, as I did when I worked temporarily at the Big Library. That was definitely my favorite thing about working there). They picked it out themselves, because they are obsessed with all things Disney Character lately, and HAD been getting The Mickey Mouse Clubhouse out over and over.
The Mickey Mouse Clubhouse can really get to you after awhile. Or, immediately.
So when they pulled not only something DIFFERENT off the rack, but something that HAPPENED to be my favorite television show of my childhood, I certainly encouraged them.
They watched it this morning while I was finally mopping the kitchen (which had gotten rather unbelieveably sticky while I was off either Not Being Home or Working Fanatically in the Garden, which by the way I am regretting a bit at the moment because my back is messed up. Again). Not only did I remember every episode that was on the disk, I found myself HEARING THE SOUNDTRACK a split-second ahead of it happening. Wow, I must have watched that a lot, to have it still securely in the depths of my brain twenty-some years on. How many episodes WERE there, in a show that aired five days a week for several years? There were many, many repeats. But when I was a kid, I LIKED repeats. I had my favorite episodes, and WAITED until they were shown again (one of my favorites was on this disk, coincidentally. From the very first FRAMES-- I didn't even catch the episode title-- I knew it, and said, "Oh, this was one of my favorites!" I'm not entirely sure why, today).
And reading the credits of one episode, I cheered, because who was listed as head writer? Diane Duane. No WONDER this was my favorite TV show!
So I found it altogether an amusing experience.
Oh, the kids liked it, too. Sam actually keeps pointing out that there are 3 disks in the case, so he has lots more Ducktales to watch.
Did I mention how, packed away in my files of childhood writing, I discovered I'd written a bunch of terrible Ducktales fanfiction? I'd apparently blocked it out until then.
