Sometimes I read old assignments of mine from college and grad school and am struck by how intelligent I used to be. Honestly, I think I've lost my chops.

Though I guess nobody's COMPLAINED about a lack of professionalism in the One Book Manuals or anything. Still, I think my brain may have rotted.

Blame it on Sammy. They say the baby brain never totally goes away. I have noticed it's much harder doing school now, but that may be the never catching up on sleep part. Also, because I have a math degree, it is assumed that I can do all sorts of math in my head, which has never actually been my forte (I was in it more for the logic and solving big equations), but even simple stuff seems harder to do in my head than it used to.

Oh, I do. I also blame it on my not having very professional jobs over the past few years-- I'm out of practice.

I've felt that way myself on occasion, and I've never been pregnant. :P

Well we've also both struggled to get a Career going, and when you can't USE your brain that way, you know, you lose it and all. There's this girl I was friendly with in library school whom I just rediscovered because I found her book review blog, which is actually somewhat well-respected in the world of kid-lit blogging, and as a matter of fact she's a PROFESSIONAL reviewer and was chosen for next year's Printz award committee, and I'm like, dude, I've just been rotting here, meanwhile. And let's not even mention those kids in their early-to-mid twenties with great and well-respected book deals....

Like that kid who wrote Eragon?

Actually, no, I meant writers who aren't afraid of EDITING but are still younger than me. Those who are technically adults. But yeah.

This "baby brain" thing concerns me. I'm so absent-minded now, I imagine I'll have to go into an institution or have a full-time assistant if this ever happens to me.

Well, like I said above, I also blame some of my state on my having spent most of my time since college in a job that doesn't even require a high school diploma, so you've got Career Responsibilities going for you.
