My friends page has been unusually quiet over the past few days. Granted, I have one Friend in Europe and one in a state of Moving, so that cuts the list back by two regular posters. So instead of having things to read when I'm sitting here with a baby on my lap looking for something I can DO with a baby on my lap, I worked on a couple good ol' Livejournal games that had appeared on my Friends page over the past couple weeks. That's how LONG it took to work on them actually, because A) I was often typing one-handed, and B)though I was whiling away time, I was whiling away VERY SHORT BITS of time at a time.

But the first one I HAD, just HAD to do... um, again... because unwittingly my new Friend [livejournal.com profile] marisa724 posted it just the other week in her journal. And hey, like I need the excuse. You got it. It's....

The Magnificent-Though-Much-Maligned Guess-the-Lyric Game!!!!

Since Marisa did just the first lines, and since just first lines seemed to work so much better last time we played, first lines it is again, although there were times I would have picked other, cooler lines instead. Still, must give y'all a fighting chance. Maybe with the people who have friended me since the last time we played, they'll be more people who are willing to take the guesses.

And yes, I do give points for guessing. 2 for each correct title, one for each correct artist (3 points possible per song!), and partial points for guesses at genre, decade, and other information, like "Ooo, I swear I know this, it's really fast and the next part goes something like..." Assuming you're not totally off.
So here are thirty random songs played by my computer on shuffle over the course of-- how long it took me to actually listen to thirty songs:

1. "Let me take you to the movies, let me take you to the show..."
2 "Say [title] and you'll be free..."
3. "I am just a poor boy, though my story's seldom told..."
4 "I think I'm gonna be sad, I think it's today..."
5 "Ground control to Major Tom..."
6 "Come on and dance. Come on and dance. Let's make some romance"
7 "And I never thought I'd feel this way, and as far as I'm concerned I'm glad I got the chance to say..."
8 "You say the hill's too steep to climb..."
9 "Move yourself: you always live your life never thinking of the future"
10 "Hello, is there anybody in there?"
11 "Some folks are born made to wave the flag..."
12 "Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day..."
13 "Well, justa look at that girl with the lights coming up in her eyes.'
14 "You make me weep and wanna die"
15 "Holding you close undisturbed before a fire"
16 Okay I am skipping this one because the first line is the title and the rest of the lines are unintelligible. It was Zeppelin, "NObody's fault but mine."
Instead, I'll replace it with this other song that has nothing to do with it except that it happens to be the song that's on right now: "All is quiet on [title]." I wonder if that's enough.
17 "Now I've been happy lately, thinking about the good things to come"
18 "[title],out there in the cold, getting lonely, getting old..."
19 "I never knew how complete love could be, til she kissed me and said baby, please, [title]"
20 "To lead a better life, I need my love to be here."
21 "One morning I woke up and I knew that you were really gone."
22 "Well I built me a raft and she's ready for floatin'"
23 "Every day she takes a morning bath, she wets her hair"
24 "Because you're sweet and lovely, girl, I love you"
25 "Well I heard some people talking just the other day, and they said you were gonna put me on the shelf."
26 "Well no one told me about her, the way she lied"
27 "Leave your cares behind. Come with us and find..." Dudes, I bet you can at least name the genre.
28 "They put a parking lot on a piece of land Where the supermarket used to stand."
29 "'There must be some kind of way out of here,' said the Joker to the Thief."
30 "A man walks down the street; he says, 'why am I soft in the middle, now?'"

Artists that are repeated: 2,4,20,and 24, with 23 by a former group member; 30 is by a former member of 3; 8,10,12, and 18 are all by one which has been grossly underrepresented in this game in the past--oo, and only one of them is somewhat obscure this time, the others are among their most well-known; 15 and 21, though unfortunately in the past no one on my friends list has EVER seemed to know any songs by this group even though they're relatively famous. The group is. 15 is pretty not famous, unless you know the group, but like I said, no one here seems to. Angie does, dangit. She loves them even more than I do. Angie needs to get on LiveJournal. Especially since she quit MySpace. Anyway.

So seriously, do some guessing. I only do this because I care.

Okay, then there was this little survey I found on [livejournal.com profile] vovat's page...I think. It's been awhile. And considering how unserious I took most of the survey, you might wonder why I bothered. But that's because I'm just that psycho about surveys.

1. What's your full name? Puddinin Tane ask me again and I'll tell you the same.

2. Do you like it? Are there any bits you would change? no, because then it wouldn't be it, and then what would it be?

3. If you had to pick another, which would be most you? Emily Matavia

4. If you are arguing something inconsequential, would you rather be proven wrong beyond your own doubt or win the argument but remain ignorant of your mistake? If it's really completely inconsequential and no one will ever know otherwise, I'd rather be right.

5. You are gifted a superpower! The superpower you get can be anything at all. However, the person who annoys you the most in the whole world also recieves the exact same power. What superpower do you choose? I'd fly and I don't care what the annoying person does about it. 'Sides, flying might make them less annoying. Or at least make them fly away.

6. Out of all the daydreams you've ever had in some boring academic situation (highschool etc), which would you most like to come true? The one where I'm a famous author and I visit Mrs. Forte's class and inspire the kids in it as well as give props to Mrs. Forte

7. So, you have a cosplay (fancy dress of characters from series, animes books etc) party to attend. You have to go in role play, ie, act the part. Who would you go as? If I can still fit into my Hermione Granger outfit, that. That's probably easiest to stay in character with anyway. I'm sure I still fit my Princess Leia costume since it's basically a sheet that can be belted accordingly, but I doubt I can keep up the character as long.

8. Who would you like to be the voice in your head, accent wise? Emma Thompson, if that's not too Stranger Than Fiction-esque.

9. If you could go down in history as anything, what would you want to be known for? Great literature

10. Conversely, what thing that you commonly do would you least like to be caught on live tv? uh, probably if it had just caught me scraping the buildup off my teeth just now, that wouldn't be too pretty

11. Who would be the worst person possible to wake up surgically grafted to? I'd prefer nobody, actually, and therefore can't think of a worst.

12. Would a dramatic life of bad things happening be worse than a life empty of incident? it depends if there are also good things happening during all the bad things.

13. Where would you most like to be right now, and with who? In bed. With Jason, but sleeping.

14. Whats your current favorite item of clothing? New nighttime nursing bras, which are somehow comfortable, supportive, AND easy to use all in one. Too bad I soaked both of them and don't have them to wear tonight.

15. And what things offend you in a manner particular to you? I.e. what offends you way more than most people? politicians going on about teacher accountability and never doing anything to ACTUALLY help the schools. and people who honk their horns.

It's hot in here, and I know it's cooler in Sammy's room because I put the fan on in there-- and I was just in there-- but I keep thinking I need to keep checking on him to make sure he's not overhot. I'm paranoid about overheating him. Although i never get close. When he was just a few weeks old he kept screaming because he was overCOLD and I never did figure it out. Jason did, luckily. Well anyway.
So now of course I want to play! Luckily I'm killing a little time waiting for an email and can justify it.....

1.
2
3. The Boxer, Paul Simon
4 Ticket to Ride, The Beatles
5 Space Oddity, David Bowie
6 Swingtown, Steve Miller Band
7 That's What Friends are For, with... oh gosh -- Dionne Warwick, Stevie Wonder, was it -- Gladys Knight? I'm forgetting someone
8
9 Owner of a Lonely Heart, by... argh, no clue!
10 This is Pink Floyd, but that's all I know
11
12
13 Somebody's Baby, by... Rick Springfield? I'm just picturing "Fast Times", that's all
14
15
16
17
18
19
20 Here, There and Everywhere, The Beatles
21
22 Black Water, Doobie Brothers (I remember laying on someone's floor in college, we were all singing the 'take me by the hand (hand)' part, and no, we weren't stoned...!)
23 Another Day, Paul McCartney
24 For You Blue, The Beatles
25
26 She's Not There, by -- no idea!
27
28 Come Dancing, by the Kinks
29 "
30 Call Me Al, Paul Simon

If I really did get all the ones I think I did -- about 50% -- I did pretty well! I must say your list reads kind of like a mix tape I would've made in college. I was never a Pink Floyd, etc. kinda gal though. :)
Yay, the benefits of adding friends! You got a lot I was sure nobody on my friends list... previously... would have gotten.
3.yep, actually it's Simon and Garfunkel, but I'll give full 3 points anyway
4, 5, and 6 -- 3 pts each, that's 9 total
7 Impressive artist memory! It's actually credited to "Dionne Warwick and Friends." When I wasn't sure of the exact words I looked them up and actually found them on an Elton John lyric site! anyway, 3 pts.
9. Two pts for title. I'll post full answers later if you're curious
10. and 1 pt for artist!
13. 2 pts for title.Good guess on the artist-- it's someone a little more famous, but this was definitely one of the ones I didn't know if anyone would get.
20- 3 pts
22- 3 pts and I must say I've done such things myself many times
23 and 24-- 3 each, 6 total
26- 2pts
28- 3 pts
30- 3 pts (though, to be nitpicky, it's actually "YOU CAN call me al")

YAY! Thank you for joining my friends! I no longer feel like I have a computer of completely unknown and yet often pretty famous songs!
40 points total. Not that you win anything if you get the most or anything.
Incidentally, I felt the same way about your list when you posted yours.

It took me awhile to get into Pink Floyd myself, actually-- I hated them for years. It wasn't until I heard some of their more obscure stuff and listened to some entire albums in context that I grew to love them, and developed new appreciation for songs like #10 which I had previously hated. I still think "Another Brick in the Wall pt 2" is way overplayed though.

Okay, I haven't read the entire post yet, but I want to do this lyric-guessing thing before I go to work, so here goes:

2. The Word - Beatles
3. The Boxer - Simon and Garfunkel
5. Space Oddity - David Bowie
10. Comfortably Numb - Pink Floyd
20. Here, There, And Everywhere - Beatles
26. She's Not There - Zombies
29. All Along The Watchtower - Bob Dylan (well, he wrote it, anyway; it might well be Jimi Hendrix or someone else singing it)
30. You Can Call Me Al - Paul Simon

4 and 24 must also be Beatles songs, while 8, 12, and 18 are Pink Floyd, but I don't know which songs. As for 23, well, I guess I have a one in four chance of getting the artist right...Paul McCartney? I don't know.

All correct, 24 pts, with an addendum on 29-- heh, I wondered if anybody would guess Dylan. But yes, it is Hendrix. Inclined to give you bonus points for trivia. Then again I wouldn't say you actually get points for guessing the artists on 4 24 8 12 and 18... but your one in four guess on 23 is correct... so lets make your score an even, uh, 26. (like Who's Line Is It Anyway, the points get awarded and have no bearing on much of anything).

Then again I wouldn't say you actually get points for guessing the artists on 4 24 8 12 and 18...

No, I didn't think I would, but I figured it was worth a shot.

What does "NAK" stand for, by the way? I'm used to seeing that on letters from my grandparents, because it stand for my name followed by those of my sister and brother, but I doubt that's what it means here. {g}

Nursing at Keyboard, which is probably more than you wanted to know, but accounts for why I often lack capitalization and other things that require typing coordination, such as fixed typos.

3. Simon and Garfunkel "America" or something?

5 I thought the song was CALLED "Ground Control to Major Tom" or something.

6 I know this song, But I dont know the title or singer

7 Ditto on this one

8 Didn't I write that lyric?

28 This lyric sounds a lot like Amy Grant's "Big Yellow Taxi" but I know from singing it at karaoke that this song isn't the same one. \]

3. One point for the artist!
5. Nope, and just to make matters more confusing, there IS a song called "Major Tom" which tells the same story in a completely different way, by a different artist in a different decade, and I have BOTH those songs on my computer. But this isn't that one. That one's first line is "standing there alone, the ship is waiting..." Anyway.
6. and 7. yes you probably do.
8. Hah, yeah, it sounds like one of your lyrics. The lyrics are great, here's a link to them. (http://rockinlibrarian.livejournal.com/4650.html) (also giving away the answer, but anyone reading the comments ought to have played already anyway). this is one of my favorite songs ever.
28. I thought the same thing when I looked at the line typed out!
One full point and let's say-- three halves and 2 quarter (the former for recognizing the songs and the latter for insightful comments), adds up to three points.

Isn't "Big Yellow Taxi" by Joni Mitchell? Or did Amy Grant cover it? I know Counting Crows did.

Date: 2007-06-16 01:24 am (UTC)From: [identity profile] rockinlibrarian.livejournal.com
Yeah on all counts. Amy Grant's cover was the first I and probably most people in our generation ever heard it though.

3. The Boxer – Simon & Garfunkel
4 Ticket to Ride - Beatles
5 Rocket Man – Elton John
11 Fortunate Son - CCR
26 She’s Not There - ??
30 You Can Call Me Al – Paul Simon

Gee, I’m not so good at this game – now if it was a recognize-the-melody game, I’d be all over that.

Date: 2007-06-13 11:29 pm (UTC)From: [identity profile] rockinlibrarian.livejournal.com
3,4, 11, 30, correct, three points each, 26 correct title, 2 points. 5, sorry, wrong astronaut song. Is it scary how many astronaut songs there are? Even more scary how many songs about Major Tom there are (see my comment to Liz above)? Good for getting Fortunate Son, I was kind of surprised no one else had gotten it yet.

I have always thought a guess the melody game would be awesome. I have wanted to do one where you have sound clips of just the first two or three seconds of songs and have to identify them, but I don't know how one would actually do this. Actually I can probably guess, but I don't think I have the SOFTWARE for it, not to mention the time...!

5: David Bowie and I thought that was the title
7: that's what friends are for Dion Warwick
8: Pink Floyd
10: Pink Floyd, Comfortably numb
12: Pink Floyd
18: Hey You, Pink Floyd
25: The Eagles I'm already gone
30: I so know this one. i can see the vidoe with the sax other words are why is my life so hard. I hate when i know I know something. I'm sure it will come to me later.

Date: 2007-06-15 02:07 pm (UTC)From: [identity profile] rockinlibrarian.livejournal.com
5- 1 right artist, and yeah, see my comment to Liz above
7 -3pts title and artist
8- 1pt
10 3 pts
12 1 pt
18 3 pts, you were the first to get this one and here I thought it was the EAsIeSt of the Floyds
25 3 pts another that you were the first to get!
30 1/2 point because that sure does sound like the video and the other words
15 1/2 points!
