Whether you, like Lewis, believe this dichotomy (I *think* that's the word I want) comes from the devil, or is simply the result of human nature, I find it somewhat comforting to think that it is not a new phenomenon, that it is something people have been struggling with for a long time, trying to find the balance in their own lives between two sets of opposites.
