A friend and I were just talking about this the other day - then she sent me this quote (through FB no less!): "He (the devil) always sends errors into the world in pairs--pairs of opposites...He relies on your extra dislike of one to draw you gradually into the opposite one. But do not let us be fooled. We have to keep our eyes on the goal and go straight through between both errors. We have no other concern than that with either of them.” C.S.Lewis

Whether you, like Lewis, believe this dichotomy (I *think* that's the word I want) comes from the devil, or is simply the result of human nature, I find it somewhat comforting to think that it is not a new phenomenon, that it is something people have been struggling with for a long time, trying to find the balance in their own lives between two sets of opposites.
