well, first of all - you should suspend all activities (including child-rearing) immediately and read the entire Bartimaeus trilogy. It is amazing in ways that cannot be described.
Second, yes yes yes to the Lost Conspiracy and Beauty Queens. It seems that many people were turned off by Beauty Queens, perhaps because of the less than perfect crafting that you describe, but I liked it a lot better than Going Bovine, partially because it *was* so off the wall. It tried so much and succeeded at so much that even the near misses were endearing to me. And The Lost Conspiracy is just ridiculously good.
