Hi,
It occurs to me I haven't given you a proper This-is-what-Sammy's-up-to-nowadays post in a long time, and it could be, in fact, that you care. Or at least it's all well and fitting that I do, every so often, because he grows and develops so quickly and all that YOU would be like "Wait, he DOES that now? He's HOW big?" since you don't get to see him everyday. Even I have those moments too, and I DO see him.
The thing he does that floors me is attempt to walk. Unassisted. He has indeed taken his First Steps as they say, though I have to point out that this is not the same as Being Able to Walk-- but it's still Just Not Right for 9 months. (It turns out this is another Jason's family thing. MimMim's relatives tend to walk at 9 months, even the ones that DIDN'T grow up to be gymnasts like Bethany). He gets all excited and bursts forward, running, as if attempting to get as far as possible before falling over, which usually happens after about three steps (or he grabs the nearest something so he doesn't have to fall over, and keeps going). He's only now starting to STAND unassisted with confidence (though yes, he stood unassisted in that "Look ma, no hands!" way a month ago), and yesterday I actually caught him a few times standing up without pulling up on anything else first. But the most fun part is that he TOTALLY KNOWS he's accomplishing something. He gets this huge grin and occasionally starts laughing, too.
He makes me laugh SO much. And sometimes I think he does it on purpose.
It's clear that he's got his dad's social skills too, rather than his mom's or uncle's thank goodness. He's definitely attuned to other people. What's been cool over the holidays was watching how he interacts with other babies. You can see the differences in personalities and chemistries already. It seems there may be some good-natured rivalry and one-upmanship with his cousin Reese as time goes by; he instinctively seems to know that he needs to be gentle with preemie friend Anna, but he's totally sweet on her too, so that may be just a CUTE, caring relationship; and he and
majellen's own Ellie-- well, they're going to be hellraisers together. That actually might be fun. Sort of. I have to watch him with the group at the Le Leche League meetings though, because there he has a tendency to be pushy with the other babies.
He's very expressive, in his face, body, and vocalization (not that he SAYS anything). But he's not particularly loud. Except occasionally he likes to roar at people. But even his crying is not very loud. He doesn't like loud noises, especially high pitched ones. He's started being terrified of the food processor and the sewing machine, which limits me from doing those things unless J is home to distract him in another room; he doesn't mind the garbage disposal as MUCH but is definitely wowed by it.
The funniest thing he does lately is his dancing, though. Whenever he hears music, he dances to it-- bobbing and/or bouncing and/or swaying, and to the beat, too, I swear. He likes to slam the buttons on any of his toys that play music, then dances until the music stops, then he slaps the music on again. It's really hysterical to watch. I've tried to get video on several occasions, but as usually happens just as I get the camera on, he usually gets distracted by something else-- the camera, some times.
Physical development: size, he's stalled out a bit in the past three months, and is now down to the 25th percentile in weight (was 75th the first half-year), but holding steady at average (50th %) for height-- built skinny like daddy, though probably slightly shorter ultimately (J's random tall gene can't be THAT powerful). He now has seven teeth. Got the front two on the bottom in October, the four on top in December, and one more on the bottom just today!
He LOVES any kind of finger food. He wants to feed himself when at all possible. He's started getting bored when I spoon-feed him, but anything he can do HIMSELF is gone in no time. He'll eat a whole half of banana if I give it to him in chunks he can bite himself-- oh yeah, and if I make the bits too SMALL he doesn't want them, either! I figure I ought to let him start experimenting with spoonfeeding himself, but we don't have any baby-safe dishes to put the food in. He got a gift card from J's aunt and uncle and I'm planning on getting him some plastic dishes with it... whenever I get out to do so!
Anything I leave out? Well, ask if you want to know; otherwise, that's the round-up.
