Up here in Canada we're pretty darn shocked. Stunned, blown away, aghast.

But when I see the responses from so many American bloggers, the metaphors they're using, the stories they're referencing, I think, maybe this could turn out okay in the long run. Because maybe the fear and bigotry and ignorance will finally be foregrounded enough to create a backlash strong enough to wipe it out. Maybe it takes a Sauron to bring out the Samwise Gamgees who didn't think they needed to be strong or heroic or make a stand.
