I've got a project for you, though maybe you'll be very knowledgeable on the subject and it will be an easy one for you. We have found many picture/pre-school books with ethnic diversity. You find a couple on Amazon and they recommend more, so I also have a full wishlist of ethnic diversity related stories as well as stories that don't have anything to do with ethnic diversity, but happen to have characters that are ethnically diverse.
Now. Nora is getting into small chapter books that have occasional pictures. Tinkerbell in particular. She liked the original Wizard of Oz. Little House didn't quite get past the first book so I'll try again when she's a bit older. Also, we have been finding at garage sales and library sales books from the likes of Beverly Cleary, Judy Blume, Roald Dahl, etc., for future reading. I already have things like Little Women, tons of stuff from L.M. Montgomery, etc. But nothing really in those age groups with any kind of ethnic diversity.
This is important not just for Henry, but for Nora to have, too, so that she will continue to see that there are other people in the world not necessarily like her beyond just her little brother and my little brother.
So here's my challenge for you. Help me find some books for girls, some books for boys, and some books for both that have some ethnic diversity. I'm sure they're out there. I just don't know what they are and I'm not entirely sure where to look since I live in the white 'burbs. Suggestions?
