The boy learned to flip back-to-front on Friday, and since then he always does it when he's trying to fall asleep, so he ends up sleeping, if not entirely on his tummy, MOSTLY there except for his right arm that sticks out so he can suck his thumb, so his upper half is on his side and his bottom half is on his tummy. He seems to nap better this way. Strangely he still sleeps at night contently on his back, but during the day he has to twist over like this. It's like his way of saying "Take that, Back-To-Sleep Campaigners! I refuse to obey all mandates!" Which pretty much fits with his personality, which he has apparently inherited solely from his dad. That COULD be a good thing in the long run... but makes for a rather scary childhood for mom!

Yeah, we went to Baby Ellie's Due Date Party on Saturday night, and unfortunately Sammy seems to have outgrown his ability to Fall Asleep Anywhere In the Middle Of Anything, so he was really fussy and tired when bedtime hit but he would NOT fall asleep, so giving up we almost went home, except we went to sit by the bonfire and there Sammy calmed right down, you guessed it, mesmerized by the flames.

He's also apparently teething. This resulted in some Bad moments-- he had a really bad evening/night last friday, screaming and rubbing his head/tugging at his ear (actually, this was when he first flipped over, in the middle of a screaming and thrashing session, but he's done it many times since then without the screaming and thrashing so I guess it counts), which made me call the doctor to see if his ear infection hadn't gone away yet. But we went to the doctors' Saturday morning and both ears were perfectly healed, so it was all pronounced as Probably Teething, especially since his thrashing also included attempting to shove both hands into his mouth as deep as they could go. He's definitely reached the oral phase of development. He has a thing for shoving fabric in his mouth. Probably because it gives more than toys and such-- whenever he tries to put toys in his mouth he usually misses, or hits at a weird angle, so he gets frustrated and gives up. Another funny pathetic frustration of his is the spinny toy on the tray of his swing. He gets really furious at it because it's firmly attached and won't come to his mouth when he pulls on it. Sammy is I guess what they call a "spirited" child-- everything he does is full of energy and intensity. Most of the time he is exuberantly thrilled with life, except when he gets frustrated with something, at which point he becomes Very Put Out. (This is also pretty much directly inherited from his father, if you don't know his father). Actually, I could tell that about him from Day One, but I thought I'd use the description to sum up. It makes me happy, because not that I wouldn't love my son anyway, but I get along well with energetic, spirited kids, as long as they're nice kids (you know, the kind that get in trouble CONSTANTLY, but it's not out of malice, just the inability to behave). Actually I get along well with grownups like that too. Possibly part of why I married my husband. Their energy gives me energy and I like that! But, like I said at the end of the first paragraph... it does make motherhood, uh, interesting.

But showing you how much my life is running around already, I must point out that when I started typing this, Sammy was down for a nap, and NOW he is down for the night. Just to be even more ornery, I will now paste in a long survey I filled out YESTERDAY... which means all the answers apply to yesterday instead of today, but that's their problem:

First off, what is your name
Mommy

What did you do last night?
writhed in discomfort from a digestive upset that I suspect was triggered by my back problems.

Do you have a best friend that you can talk to 24/7?
Does anyone have anybody they can talk to 24/7? I have a best friend I LIVE with, and not only are we not even TOGETHER 24/7, but there's also the middle of the night when one or another of us is more awake and the more asleep one mutters "Sleepy" which is a nice way of saying "Leave me alone"

Do you have any siblings?
Yeah, a sister and a brother (left this verbatim). Then again I also have a sister in law, a soon-to-be-brother-in-law, and a deceased sister.

How many years apart is your mom and dad?
My dad is two months and one day older than my mom, and they were both a year younger than most of the people in their class at school, because they're just dorks that way.

Do you like someone?
Seriously, what kind of cranky people write these surveys?

What does the 7th message in your text inbox say?
I just deleted all of them, but it was something whiny and misspelled for someone named Pam. Finally the guy CALLED and found out he had the wrong number, so I stopped getting Pam's text messages.

Who sat beside you in math?
Well, the first person I think of is Steve Manges, who sat directly in FRONT of me during high school math (geometry and trigonometry) and kept me pretty entertained during what were two severely boring classes. He eventually married my friend Kari who was one of Sharon Mewherter's best friends in high school. I say that so all the HC people can play Six Degrees of Separation. Or three degrees.
The second person I think of is Kristen who shared my table in Teaching Elementary School Math I. We had a lot of fun playing with the math manipulatives.

Where is your dad right now?
New Alexandria I assume. Now that he's retired, I suppose he could be anywhere.

Do you burn incense?
No, not good for baby lungs.

Do you have a problem?
I have a lot of them. Where should I start? (also leaving verbatim)

Who is the 5th person you got a missed call from?
Probably Jason, because who else calls my cell phone?

Closest purple object?
An envelope on top of the monitor that is full of baby pictures of Jason. Oh, also a wristband from the zoo that is stuck lower down the monitor and might actually be closer.

Closest silver object?
Nail clippers, though I doubt they are the METAL silver

Closest yellow object?
Stripe on the Big Red packet that says "Freshens breath LONGER." I believe I've written before on the fallacies in that ad campaign.

Do you sing in the shower?
Really that's like the only place I DON'T sing. Though I remember practicing for "Oklahoma" tryouts in the shower. In tenth grade.

An itch on the back of my neck.

Can you cross your eyeballs?
Probably do.

Do you know all the words to the Star Spangled Banner?
Only the first verse

When is the last time you said the pledge of allegiance?
Think I had to running circle time at the day care last summer. I went for years not actually saying it even when everyone around me was, including when I was actually the teacher at the head of the class, but when it's really young kids you can't get away with not saying it.

GAMES T-shirt (which I won by being a runner-up in a GAMES contest, go me) and blue jean shorts. And glasses and underthings.

Do you like emo kids?
Depends on the person, like any category of people.

Screamo or Country?
Say what?

Polka or Disco?
Depends on the song. But probably polka, because there's much less variation in quality of polka. There's good disco and bad disco, but polka's just pretty much polka.

Flying or Driving?
Flying, except for the cost.

Who last called you?
Jason's dad, but maybe that doesn't count because he was actually just looking for Jason. Then Jason, wanting to know if he should pick up something at the store.

Was your Valentine's day nice?
I don't actually remember it at all, actually.

What are you doing now?

Yes, but they weren't ripped on PURPOSE. That's just a waste.
